About Hydraulic Seal
A hydraulic seal is a relatively soft, non-metallic ring captured in a groove or fixed combination of rings to block or separate fluid in reciprocating (linear motion) applications. Their primary purpose is to maintain system pressure, prevent fluid leakage, and block contaminants (such as dirt, dust, and moisture) from entering the equipment, which ensures optimal operational efficiency and extended machinery life.
Core Classifications
Hydraulic seals are categorised based on whether the mating components move relative to each other:
- Static Seals: Used in applications where there is no relative movement between mating parts (acting much like a fixed gasket, such as O-rings on flange joints or cylinder covers).
- Dynamic Seals: Used when there is relative motion between the surfaces. In a standard hydraulic cylinder, multiple dynamic seals work concurrently to manage pressure and movement.
